So my birthday is tomorrow and I’ll be turning 22 (and probably shamelessly singing T-Swift’s song all day). It’s an exciting time because I can feel it’s the beginning of something amazing. 20’s are the years that everyone talks about and reminisces on. It’s a time that you might fall in love, have your heart broken, find a job, change your career, and move to a different city. And that will probably ALL happen before 25. I think your 20’s are years where you get to discover the world and how you want to fit into it. I also think that it’s a time to be unapologetic. You need to *ahem* grow a pair and start making decisions that you want. Say no to that job if you know it’ll make you absolutely miserable and you can survive without it. Break up with that significant other that treats you like crap because you don’t deserve it. It’s a time to be selfish and that’s totally okay. Right now, the things I have accomplished in life are meaningful but seem like mere water drops in an ocean compared to what lies ahead. Maybe I feel like right now it’s the calm before the storm except that it’s going to be a really good storm. One of those that takes your breath away and makes you gaze up at the sky and wonder how it’s even possible something that magnificent could happen. It’s scary but amazing at the same time. The other week, I found this quote on the back of a book that holds my exact sentiments for everyone having a birthday, especially in your 20’s when things are constantly changing and some days it feels like you don’t know anything. The man who said this quote has actually given a thought like this for the past couple years, so I will be sharing all three since I think they’re all equally important and amazing.
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something. So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”
“I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you’ll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you’ll make something that didn’t exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind.”
“May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you’re wonderful, and don’t forget to make some art– write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.” – Neil Gaiman
I hope these make you think and strive to do something wonderful or maybe even disastrous but something that you want with your whole heart.
